Chimney Crown Repair

A metal chase cover covers the top of a prefabricated chimney's chase, whereas a slab called a chimney crown covers the top of a masonry chimney's stack. Rainwater, ice, sleet, and snow that fall above the chimney are diverted away from the chimney by the crown.

Here are the reason how a chimney crown can be damaged...

  • Over time, crowns can shatter, dissolve, and thin. Water is a powerful force that can produce chimney crown cracks and erosion over time. Water will only compound the problem over time, even if the fractures and deterioration are mild at first. As a result, as time passes, more and more water will enter the chimney.

  • Poor Construction of crown. The truth is that chimney crowns must meet certain specifications, such as being at least three inches thick at their narrowest point and extending beyond the chimney stack's edge (this is called the drip edge). Water, sleet, and snow should flow off instead of accumulating on the crown. Are all chimney crowns constructed to these standards? Certainly not. Leaky, damaged chimney crowns are also a product of poor construction.
